OUR PLEDGE TO YOU |
A Courtesy Reminder
for Preventing Identity Theft with
Credit Cards
Credit cards can be obtained through banks and credit unions as well as
chain stores. Many offers for "pre-approved" credit cards come in
the mail. Getting a credit card issued by department stores is simple. Only two
forms of ID are required: a driver's license with a picture ID and a second
identification, like another credit card or your Social Security card. What steps should you take to
protect your identity with credit cards? 1. Ask stores at which you are applying for credit how they safeguard credit
applications. Ensure that they are treated as secure documents. 2. Ask businesses how they store and dispose of credit card transaction
skips. Ensure that proper safeguards are in place to treat these documents
securely. 3. Never giver credit card numbers or other personal information over the
phone unless you initiate the call. Even if you initiate the call, ensure
that called party is not using a cellular or other mobile phone. 4. Sign credit cards in
permanent ink as soon as you obtain them. 5. Carry only the credit cards needed for the current trip. Most people
carry all their credit cards with them at all times. 6. Tear up or shred all "pre-approved" credit card offers before
throwing them away. Trash bags are not secure; nor are dumps. Thieves can
retrieve these documents and open credit accounts with new addresses. 7. Keep a list or photocopy of all credit accounts, along with expiration
dates and phone numbers to call in case of theft. Keep this list in a secure
spot at home. 8. When you purchase items with credit, always take your credit card
receipts with you. Never toss them in a waste basket. 9. Do not have boxes of new checks delivered to your home. Arrange to pick
them up at the bank or credit union. 10. Carefully examine each
monthly credit card statement to ensure that every charge accurately matches
credit card receipts. 11. Do not write credit card
numbers on checks. 12. Do not sign a blank
charge slip. Draw a line through all areas for recording charges above the
total. 13. If you have applied for a
new credit card and it does not arrive, contact the issuer. 14. Avoid giving credit card
numbers over the phone if you are in a public place. Even at work, others may
overhear and use the information. Receive your credit card statements at a
Post Office Box rather than at home (unless you have a
locking mailbox). If you think your identity
has been stolen, here's what to do now:
Close the accounts that you know or believe
have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. Use the
ID Theft Affidavit when disputing new unauthorized accounts.
File your complaint with the FTC. The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used
by law enforcement agencies for investigations. Filing a complaint also helps
us learn more about identity theft and the problems victims are having so
that we can better assist you. For more in-depth information on recovering from identity theft and help

Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft. How to Commit Credit Card Fraud
Identity
theft is the fastest growing crime in America. Identity theft of just a
few pieces of valid identification allows someone to apply for and receive
credit cards or debit cards in your name. Your credit rating will quickly be
damaged. Your efforts to correct these problems can literally be exhausting! Credit
Card Fraud is Easy How easy is it to steal
the numbers that identity you, get false ID, and commit credit card fraud? A lot
easier than you might think. There are traditional ways of acquiring your personal identification
information: · Stealing your wallet or
purse, · Accessing your credit
report by posing as an employer, loan officer or landlord, · Stealing mail from
mailboxes to obtain credit card statements, bank statements, or other
personal information, · Taking trash bags from
the street with old credit card and bank statements, and · "Dumpster
diving" into trash bins to retrieve financial statements. · Dishonest employees with
access to your personnel records. · Misdirected mail or email
with personal information. But today hundreds of
databases already exist that contain detailed information about your personal
life, your buying habits and other lifestyle characteristics. Various companies offer services that provide address, criminal, civil,
and professional history as well as a list of assets and bank account
numbers. Also available are your Social Security number, last six addresses,
current phone number and names and phone numbers of neighbors. Some large,
prestigious companies offering such information include Lexis-Nexis and West
Publishing Company. Many smaller companies also provide similar services. |
